I just heard “Hotline Bling” by Drake and all I can say… is wow! This song is so good! I’ve been playing it non-stop since I was released from prison two days ago, and I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of it.
You’re probably wondering why I am just hearing “Hotline Bling” in February 2018. I don’t want to miss the forest for the trees, but here’s the short story. I was arrested at a Four Loko-hosted party in Fort Lauderdale on the Fourth of July in 2015. I actually hadn’t even had a drink yet, but someone called the cops on me when they saw me breaking into a PT Cruiser (my own, I lost my keys) so I could pregame the party listening to my Fall Out Boy CD like I had been doing a lot at the time. I don’t remember the name of it, but it had “Centuries” on it.
Anyway, the cops decided to take me to the station to verify my information since I lost my wallet and keys and didn’t have any way to prove I owned the car. It should’ve only taken about five minutes to clear it up, but on the walk over to the station I mentioned to one of the officers that he looked kind of like Sam Smith and the two officers immediately started beating me with their clubs.
They skipped the station and took me straight to prison, where I quickly earned a spot in “the hole” for asking the warden if he liked Counting Crows. I had no contact with the outside world for almost three years, and the only songs I could remember were by Fall Out Boy or Sam Smith or Counting Crows. Three weeks after my arrest, “Hotline Bling” would be released.
Flash forward to yesterday, when my uncle picked me up from prison. We’re riding in his PT Cruiser (he says it isn’t mine and he bought it at a police auction, but the window is still broken from when I broke in so I know it’s mine) and I ask him if he can play the most popular songs that have been released since I was put in the hole. He puts a Billboard playlist on shuffle, and I hear “See You Again” by Wiz Khalifa (pretty good), “Post To Be” by Omarion (pretty good), and “I Took A Pill In Ibiza” by Mike Posner (really good). I think to myself, alright, that was cool, but it’s time for a little song I call “Centuries” – and then I hear those six magic words that have changed my life… “You used to call me on my…”
The beat to “Hotline Bling” is crazy good, and while I was worried that music that reminds me of the beach and the club at the same time would give me flashbacks to Fort Lauderdale 2015, it reminded my instead of what that Four Loko party was probably like. I haven’t gotten to listen to the rest of Drake’s Views album yet, but let’s just say I have pretty high hopes for it now.
I wrote this because I know a lot of people love Drake right now for a recent music video he put out. I’m sure it’s great (I haven’t seen or heard it yet), but let’s just remember why we all really love Drake. It’s “Hotline Bling”, and, I assume, Views also.
